WordPress 5.0 Upgrade
Getting Started with Gutenberg
New for 2019, Georgia Southern will apply the WordPress 5.0, or “Gutenberg” release to its WordPress environment. While the change should be seamless for endusers of the University sites, content owners and editors will see significant changes to the editing environment. the Gutenberg release introduces a block editing environment. Keep reading to learn more about this project and how we’ll approach its implementation.
We’ll be using a phased approach to this project implementation. While exact dates have not been assigned to many of the phases, the diagram below depicts the project phases in sequence:
We’re currently in the “User Testing & Training” phase of this project. For more information on how to access test environments, click the “Test Sites” tab.
Content owners and editors can access test sites to get familiar with the new WordPress editing environment. To access your test site, navigate to the “test” instance of your site and login with your MyGS credentials. We’ve used the naming convention below to make finding your test site easy:
To login to your WordPress site or test site, you will use your normal WordPress credentials. To get to your dashboard, go to your site’s homepage and add “/login” to the end of your url. Example for production site: its.georgiasouthern.edu/pmo/login. Example for test site: its-test.georgiasouthern.edu/pmo/login.
If you encounter any issues, please use our Issue Reporting form, linked below, to make us aware of these issues. We appreciate receiving this information during the testing phase of this project, and will work to resolve submitted issues before the new release is applied to our production WordPress environments.
For the WordPress 5.0 Upgrade, both tutorials and face-to-face training sessions are available. Keep reading to learn more.
WordPress offers tutorials for the 5.0/Gutenberg release. In the dashboard of the test sites, the WordPress Tutorial Videos have been updated with new training information. Use these tutorials to help guide you through many of the common WordPress functions. We recommend budgeting about one hour to review tutorials 3 – 10 and 17 – 21.
Face-to-Face training sessions are available for content owners and editors. Please expand the table below to sign up for a session!
