University Password Standard

Protecting Your Account

Strong passwords provide essential protection for email and other accounts. At Georgia Southern, our password standards are designed to help protect your accounts from intruders. Additionally, we require all user-level accounts to reset their passwords every 180 days–this includes student, faculty, and staff accounts.

When it is time to change the password on your GS account, you will receive email notifications in your account at both 10 days and 5 days prior to the 180-day deadline. If you fail to change your password prior to this deadline, you may experience some disruption in accessing Georgia Southern resources. To ensure that your password change process is as seamless as possible, be sure to change your password prior to the deadline.

Avoid Phishing Scams

“Password Change” notifications are a common phishing tactic employed by cyber criminals to gain access to your accounts. It’s important to note that Georgia Southern will NEVER ask you to share personal account information via email. Your GS password should only be changed in your MyGS portal.

You can change your password using the following steps:

  1. Log in to My.GeorgiaSouthern.edu
  2. Click your name on the top right side of the screen*
  3. Click “Personal Settings”
  4. Click on “Change Your Password”

*On mobile devices, you can access this resource using the menu (☰) at the top right of the screen.

Two-Factor Authentication

Duo is Georgia Southern’s two factor authentication service. Phishing and identity theft campaigns are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Unfortunately, a password alone provides very little protection for your accounts. When a second layer of protection is added to your accounts, risks of data breaches decrease significantly.

Duo’s two factor authentication service provides that second layer of protection by requiring a you to verify that the person logging into your accounts is actually you. If your password is stolen, your accounts and personal data could easily be compromised. By requiring you to verify your login with a second factor, Duo makes it harder for cyber criminals to access your personal information.

Using Duo is easy. Learn how >
